iSouth Throwback Thursday

Wyclef Jean ft. R.Kelly & Canibus – 
Gone till November (Remix) 1999
"Gone till November" is the third single released from Wyclef Jean's debut solo album, The Carnival. The US top ten hit, "Gone Till November" earned Jean a nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance at the 41st Grammy Awards in 1999. The remix of "Gone till November" features R. Kelly and Canibus, and contains interpolations of the songs "Michelle" by The Beatles, and "Karma Chameleon" by Culture Club. A separate music video was also made for the remix version. Grant it R.Kelly couldn’t make it because of some allegations you may have heard about that kept him in Chicago; but here’s the remix for this Thursday. Dang what happened to Canibus????

Janet Jackson - Someone to Call My Lover ft. JD
 (So So Def Remix) (2001)
"Someone to Call My Lover" is a song by Janet Jackson from her seventh studio album, All for You. Written and produced by Jackson and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the song was released as the album's second single on June 26, 2001. At the time of recording, Jackson had just divorced her longtime husband, René Elizondo, Jr., after nearly ten years of marriage. "Someone to Call My Lover", and several of the other songs on the All for You album, use Jackson's divorce and re-emergence into single life as central themes. "Someone to Call My Lover" talks about being determined to find a perfect match. For the single, a So So Def Remix was produced and became Jackson's first collaboration with later boyfriend Jermaine Dupri. The song earned Jackson a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2002.

iSouth Artist to Watch: Adrian Marcel

Raphael Saadiq presents Adrian Marcel. It is extremely rare to see an artist of his caliber to set aside time to record a testimonial lauding the talent of a newcomer. Such an endorsement should at least pique the interest of any self-confessed r&b fan. What is abundantly clear from the sound of things is that Adrian Marcel has what it takes to continue to rise. The passion in his performance and his ear for dope production will take him far. Raphael Saadiq was instrumental with some of Joss Stone’s records and looks like he’s brought something to the table with his fellow bay artist.

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover! This independent artist is from a small town in Washington state and got his biggest break backing up Raphael Saadiq. Stone has been influenced by Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Meters, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Jamie Lidell and Morrison. The compared his socially conscious music to the likes of Donny Hathaway, Bill Withers and two of his musical influences Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. A live music video of "Unaware - Allen Stone - Live From His Mother's Living Room" on Stone's YouTube account has been viewed over 2,000,000 times. Stone wanted to have a different and weird setting for this video, so they went to his mom's house and recorded it in the living room.

Attention Maxwell or Prince fans!!!! Elle Varner's voice has been compared to British singer Adele containing "soul "with a touch of raspy seduction. She is probably best known for her radio single “Refill”, but digging deeper in the Grammy nominated album “Perfectly Imperfect” is one if my favorite songs of 2013. “Not Tonight” was co-written with her father and it’s a perfect story of not having the courage to tell someone how you really feel. Elle Varner is currently working on second studio album and I hope the A&R’s at RCA don’t let a gem like this one slip through the cracks again.

In 1996 Organized Noize, the production team behind TLC and Outkast, formed an R&B group called Mista. This song introduced us to the now solo artist Bobby Valentino and was the song of every summertime barbeque.  Just like their competition Soul 4 Real, these guys faded away but this song still lasts forever. Here’s a Throwback Remix featuring Cee-Lo when he was only just a rapper.

Bridget Kelly is a pop and R&B recording artist, who has written songs for fellow American singers such as Kelly Clarkson, then secured a recording contract with American rapper and hip-hop mogul Jay-Z's record label, Roc Nation. In early 2011, Kelly and her production team had approached Frank Ocean to write a song for her debut studio album. The song in question eventually became "Thinkin Bout You”. Jay-Z is known for bringing the talent of Rihanna and Ne-Yo to the forefront. We won’t mention Memphis Bleek, Amil, Teairra Mari or the Young Gunz. I wonder why Kanye spent his own money on the first video? Hmm Is it because Jay thought Memphis Bleek was the one? Well hopefully he’s not wrong about this one. Here’s Bridget Kelly singing with the pain she’s going through. She’s the truth!!! Reminds me of Syleena Johnson and I think the ladies will feel this one.
