iSouth Artist to Watch: Sam Smith

Sam Smith - Stay With Me
Samuel Frederick "Sam" Smith (born 19 May 1992) is an English singer-songwriter. Although the first solo single form soul-inspired, London-born artist Sam Smith was issued in early 2013, it was his soaring vocal contribution to Disclosure’s October 2012 U.K. garage track “Latch” that brought him to most people’s attention. For most of his teens, Smith balanced study with music, soaking in the raw and passionate approach to performance exemplified by his favorite artist at that time such as Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Chaka Khan. “Latch” hit the upper reaches of the U.K. singles chart when Smith was 21, . It was announced on 16 December that Smith's debut studio album titled In the Lonely Hour would be released on 26 May 2014 through Capitol Records. Smith made his American television debut on Saturday Night Live on 29 March 2014, performing "Stay with Me" and "Lay Me Down". This guy is the truth!!! In a time when artists are hiding their lack of talent with smoke and dancers, this guy is bringing it vocally. Thank you UK!!!

iSouth Throwback Thursday

Lucy Pearl - Dance Tonight (Remix) (1999)
Lucy Pearl was an R&B supergroup formed in 1999, as the brainchild of former Tony! Toni! Toné! member Raphael Saadiq, A Tribe Called Quest DJ and producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad and D'Angelo. However, D'Angelo backed out of the group due to scheduling conflicts. After D'Angelo backed out Raphael came up with the idea of adding Dawn Robinson (of En Vogue) to the group. They released their self-titled debut album Lucy Pearl in 2000 and soon disbanded. Raphael Saadiq has been the only to chart since. It was a great idea, just wish they would have lasted.

Dru Hill featuring Jermaine Dupri & Da Brat -
 In My Bed (Remix) 1996

Where have all the great R&B groups gone? UGH! I giving you another track that I recorded off the radio back in the day. Dru Hill is an American singing group, most popular during the late 1990s, whose repertoire included R&B, soul, and gospel music. The members of Dru Hill were natives of Baltimore, Maryland .The quartet made a name for itself by getting jobs at a local fudge factory, "The Fudgery," at the Inner Harbor, where they sang and performed to entertain guests while making fudge. In 1995 Hiram Hicks president of Island Black Music saw the boys perform in a talent show and immediately wanted to fly them to New York to record a song called Tell Me for a movie Eddie starring Whoopi Goldberg. Blackstreet member Dave Hollister who was now pursuing a solo career originally sang on the song but after the fellas sang it for Hiram his vocals were scrapped as they recorded the song & were signed that night. After the group signed to Island Records the label suggested they change their name from Legacy to Dru Hill after Druid Hill Park, a popular park on the West side of Baltimore, the name of which is pronounced "Dru Hill" in the local accent. A dragon is used as a logo for the group."In My Bed" is a number-one platinum-selling and the remix features Jermaine Dupri, who also produced the track, and Da Brat. It was a hit single. The remix sampled Le Pamplemousse's "Gimme What You Got" (1976).

Yvette Michelle- I'm Not Feeling  You
Funkmaster Flex is an American hip hop DJ, rapper, musician and producer on New York City's Hot 97 radio station and his second installment The Mix Tape, Vol. II was released on February 11, 1997 through Loud Records. Like his previous Mix Tape release, the album is compilation of freestyles and previously released songs mixed together by Funkmaster Flex. "I'm Not Feeling You" is the title of a top ten dance single by Yvette Michele. It is based on a sample from the Sylvester song "Was It Something That I Said" from 1978. The track also features a sample of the Oran "Juice" Jones single "The Rain". DJ Winston Park won’t let it go because this was song he dropped on me in 1996 and I was blown away. I’m normally up on new music, but Funkmaster Flex’s mixtapes that were officially released through a record label blew me away. These mixtapes featured new music from Jermaine Dupri, Lil Kim, Redman, and Naughty by Nature, Lost Boyz, The Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, Wu-Tang Clan, and Puff Daddy & Mase. If you had this on cassette tape, you know how this feels. #TBT!
